With all the recent severe weather we’ve been having here in Oklahoma, I thought it would be an interesting side project to get Oklahoma weather alerts to publish to Blog Oklahoma’s Mastodon. The National Weather Service (NWA) provides free API access to their weather alerts. These are the same alerts you’ll hear over your weather radio.
Oh, by the way, you do have a weather radio, don’t you? If you live in Oklahoma, it almost should be a requirement. You can pick one up at your local Walmart or other general, sporting goods, or hardware store, or you can order one online here. They are inexpensive and will keep you weather aware.
Anyway. Using JavaScript with the aid of the JQuery library I was able to code a simple display of the latest Oklahoma weather alerts on Blog Oklahoma’s Weather page. The next part of the project is to format the alerts to fit within a 500 character limit and post them to Mastodon.
If you would like to see my code, I’ve shared it on Github as a Rabbit Hole project.
This Week
I’m doing some research for my next podcast episode, but I haven’t advanced very far yet. Hoping to get more done on it this week. I’ll share more on that once I get it all hammered down. Other than that it continue with my rabbit hole project and work out in the backyard when it’s not raining.
More later. Time to code.

Listening In
I'm still just listening to Radio Paradise. Their Main Mix is an eclectic mix of modern and classic rock, electronic, and world music. I tend to listen to it most of the day, but they also have a couple of different channels that equally good to listen to, a Mellow Mix, a Rock Mix, and a Global Mix.
I'm just a few chapters from being done with Demon by John Varley on Audible. It's been good to revisit the Gaea trilogy, but I think it's time for something new.
