Over on Reddit, many subreddits have gone dark to protest Reddit’s decision to charge for API access. Because of Reddit’s decision, some popular third-party apps have shut down. I realize it might be an unpopular thing to say, but Reddit can do what they want with its service. They’re a private company. If they want to charge for API access, they can. Do I like this decision? No. No, I don’t. Going dark for a day might send a message, but I doubt it will change anything. Will it keep you from using Reddit in the future? Likely not. Look how many of you are still on Twitter.
Today I started looking for a Reddit alternative. Does that mean I’ll stop using Reddit? No, but I do like to keep my options open. What I found was Lemmy. It’s an open-source federated Reddit-like service. Now I’m still learning how things work, but it seems simple enough. I’ve even started a new Lemmy Oklahoma community that I invite you to check out. Oh, instead of a subreddit, it’s a community on Lemmy. Since Lemmy is federated, like Mastodon, you can join any instance that interests you or even start your own server. You can even follow the Lemmy communities from Mastodon (follow @oklahoma@lemmy.sdf.org for our new community).
Lemmy does have a lot of possibilities, I think. I’ll be sure to share more as I learn the ends and outs of the service. If you decide to check out Lemmy, let us know your thoughts. Please feel free to leave a comment on the newsletter.
This Week
This week is going to be a get-caught-up week. I’ve finally finished that large work project and can return to a somewhat regular schedule. It’s been over a month since I last looked over the podcast. I think it will take me some time to get back up to speed. I might have to just start over on a few scripts. As always, please see the Blog Oklahoma Projects board on Trello for what I’m working on.
More later. Time to dig through my notes.
