I’ll have to admit that I was sleeping on Obsidian. No, not the dark glasslike volcanic rock. I’m talking about the note-taking application.
I’ve used many applications and services over the years to keep track of my notes — Evernote, OneNote, Joplin, Simplenote, Bear, Notion, and Google Keep, to name a few. Each of them has their pros and cons.
For the last few years, I’ve used a combination of Google Keep and Notion as my go-to applications. Google Keep for the short note clips, mostly from my phone, and Notion for large organizational note-keeping.
I’ve heard of Obsidian but never checked it out until recently. How I was missing out. It matches how I do notes. Here are a few of the features I really like:
I like the simple text-based markdown-enabled editor. As someone who likes to keep their hands on the keyboard, this is ideal for me. No block-style editor requiring mouse use.
I like that it works locally, and it’s all file-based instead of sitting in a database somewhere. Meaning I can get to my notes when the internet is down. Something that happens quite often here in rural western Oklahoma. It also makes for easy backups.
I love the Daily Notes feature. Open Obsidian at the start of the day and it automatically creates a new note file. I used to leverage Windows Notepad for this kind of thing. But with Obsidian, I can use markdown and link to other notes.
And finally, community plugins. I’ve only installed one so far. It lets me tie a hotkey to a template (templates are a feature I also like). The fact that if there is a feature I need, someone’s likely already created a plugin for it just pleases me.
Will I be leaving Notion for Obsidian? Yes and no. For any new personal projects, I'll start in Obsidian. However, if I need to work on a team project, I’ll likely still use and recommend Notion. Plus, I still have years of notes in Notion.
Are you using Obsidian or another notes app? Please leave a comment and let us know what you like about it.

Listening In
It was a Radio Paradise kind of week.
I've finished listening to Space: 1969 by Bill Oakley on Audible. It was good. On to the next book.
And I'm finished binge-watching Red vs Blue on YouTube. Now, I'm ready for the next and final season.
