Cleaning House
Can two busy adults with different schedules and ADHD clean a messy house? Also, don't forget to vote in the Oklahoma Primary Election on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
Cleaning House
We kept putting it off, but we really needed to clean the house. I’m not speaking metaphorically or politically; I mean actually cleaning our home. Two busy adults on two different work shifts both with ADHD, the house ends up a little messy.
Oh, sure, we do work on the house and keep up with the dishes, the laundry, and other household tasks. Unfortunately, it might take us a day or two to get to any one task, and stuff will get pilled up and forgotten about, like leaving the said dishes in the drying rack or clean laundry on the table. We have stacks of junk mail we need to sort through. I can’t remember the last time we vacuumed the living room. Oh, and the bathrooms. Aah!
With me, when I work on the house, I’ll hyper-focus on one job or hop around from task to task, and nothing really gets done. My partner is close to the same; only if she sits down, even for a moment, she’ll absent-mindedly pick up her phone or Kindle and start reading a book. I think between us our house has reached an equilibrium between clean and cluttered. I’m just going to call it messy and be done with it.
If you search online, you’ll find many articles and advice on cleaning with ADHD. Like this one: Cleaning with ADHD: 7 realistic tips for neurodivergent brains. There are some good tips in that and other articles.
Unfortunately, it takes time to break certain habits or establish new routines. Sometimes, you have to start small. I’ve started a few tasks I’m attempting to do every day, hoping to make them routine. Little things, really. Such as, when I get up from the couch, I’ll pick up any coffee cups that might be in the living room and take them to the kitchen. I’ll wipe down the bathroom sink in the mornings when I get ready for work. Or I’ll make sure dirty laundry is in the hamper instead of on it. Like I said, little things, but they'll add up. Soon, the house might actually stay clean. We’ll see.
If you’ve been in the same situation when it comes to cleaning your house, what advice would you give?
More later. Time to finally carry that stack of towels upstairs.
